The Immune-Boosting Power of Colostrum

By: Jeremy Maddock

Bovine Colostrum is the form of “milk” taken from dairy cows, within 24 hours of giving birth to a calf. The liquid is known for its high protein immunoglobulin and antibody contents, and numerous immune and growth factors that can be highly beneficial to humans.

Although many animals have some sort of colostrum, a lot of scientific research conducted in the last decade has shown that the combination of immune and growth factors in bovine colostrum are almost identical to those in human colostrum. Research has also shown that the substance of bovine colostrum is not species specific, and can work effectively to benefit humans as well as other mammals.

Colostrum is highly beneficial to humans because of the fact that once puberty has passed, out bodies gradually produce less and less of the important immune and growth factors that help us heal damaged body tissue, and fight off dangerous diseases. It is due in part to the loss of these essential immune components, our bodies age and eventually die. Colostrum is the only completely natural source of these vital components, and has demonstrated the ability to kill viruses and bacteria, stimulate tissue repair (especially that of the bowel lining), stimulate fat utilization for fuel, optimize cellular reproduction, and ultimately slow down the aging process.

Taking Colostrum is especially important for those persons who were not breast fed at birth. Those of us who were formula fed, and missed out on the natural benefits of breast-feeding may have immune and digestive systems that are somewhat compromised. Colostrum can help in restoring these systems to optimal functioning levels, no matter how old we are.

Fitness Workout - Exercising the Present Moment!

By: Michaela Scherr

Try one, more than one, or all of the following exercises to access the present moment.
As you do the exercises below, retain your focus for at least three minutes. The longer you stay focused the longer you’ll be in the present moment.

If you start thinking about dinner; what’s on television; the shopping etc, then you are no longer in the present but the future or possibly the past. If this happens refocus on your breathing to again be aware of the present moment.

Sit and be still, as in do nothing except become aware of the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe in and out, listening to the sound of your breath.

To become fully present, right here right now, focus on what is happening inside your body. Do you have hunger pains? Are you cold/hot? Move your tongue around inside your mouth and feel your teeth.

Hear the sounds of people, traffic, music and anything else that is around you at this present moment.

Become aware of the colours around you, the colours of your clothing, the furniture, the seat you’re in, the colours surrounding the windows and doors within your line of sight.

Start to feel the texture of the materials you come in contact with. Right now feel the texture of the clothing you’re wearing, is it soft, rough, cool, warm, fluffy? Do you notice the weave of the shirt, trousers or skirt you’re wearing?

Put your hands together and start massaging your palms. Do you notice the lines in your palms, does your skin feel dry, smooth or rough. Now massage the tops of your hands. Do you notice any differences?

Concentrate only on what you are doing right now. Nothing else exists while you are concentrating on the task at hand. When you do this you are in the present moment, tomorrow and yesterday no longer exist there is only you and this moment.

When you have conversations with others, be there with them. Listen attentively; match their tone, speed, volume and pitch and also their breathing rate. People can sense when you’re not paying attention to them. Put yourself in their shoes. Do you want to be heard when you speak to others?

Face yourself in a mirror. Practise smiling at yourself, poke out your tongue, notice whether your shoulders rise and fall as you breathe, inspect the colour of your eyes, are your shoulders straight or lopsided? Arch your eyebrows! Be totally present with yourself – it can be totally fun!

If you still have some problems accessing the here and the now, team up with a friend or in a group. You could have the time of your life in the now, filled with much laughter and possibly an insight or two!

Have fun

Two Substances That May Reduce the Risk Of Cancer

By: Alex Fir

Food helps us by supplying many vital micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Your genetic composition can make you susceptible to some types of cancer. Your way of eating plays a major role in increasing or reducing the risk of cancer.

Phytochemicals are non-nutritive substances found in plants. They protect us against diseases when they are in our body. Isoflavones and Lycopene are phytochemicals.
Isoflavones decrease the risk of breast cancer for premenopausal women, while Lycopene decreases the prostate cancer risk in middle aged men.

Soya is a great source of Isoflavones like genisteinm and daidzein. Although isoflavones are weak estrogens, the established hypothesis has been that isoflavones exert antiestrogenic effects when placed in a high-estrogen environment (pre-menopausal women) and estrogenic effects when in a low-estrogen environment, (post-menopausal women).

Daidzein was found to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in many studies.
Genistein:
- Reduces the protective mechanisms of cancer cells.
- Acts as an antioxidant.
- Inhibits several enzymes in cellular signaling pathways.
- Increases levels of transforming growth factor-beta’ that inhibits the growth of tumor cells.
- Inhibits the growth of wide range of both hormone-dependent and hormone-independent cancer cells.

Decreased rates of breast, uterus and prostate cancers are associated with Soya consumption because of its antiestrogenic action.

Lycopenes:
Tomatoes, watermelon and other orange-to-red colored vegetables and fruits like
paprika, rose-hips etc. contain abundant lycopenes. A better level of Lycopene is
produced from tomatoes when they cooked with olive or canola oil.

Lycopenes are natural carotenoids that act as antioxidants. They also block the conversion of food mutagens found in fried, cooked meats and fish in the form of heterocyclic amines.

Lycopenes are good inhibitors of cell proliferation and lower the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol thus minimizing the heart disease risk.

Lycopenes reduce the risk for stomach, breast, colon, lung and prostate cancer. Both raw and cooked tomatoes have same amount of cancer fighting power. Lycopenes stimulate the enzymes that block the carcinogenic damage to the cell.

Sleep and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

By: Wendy Owen

Could improving your sleep lessen the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)?

Our aim here is to understand the connection between the two as it may be possible to confuse the symptoms of CFS and sleep deprivation. There are however definite differences.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms

The main symptom of CFS and probably the hardest to live with, is constant and persistent fatigue lasting 6 months or more. Others include:

Feeling feverish
Sore throat
Muscle aches and pains
Tender or swollen lymph nodes
Joint pain
More headaches than usual
Abnormal lethargy after exercise
Poor concentration
Depression
Poor quality sleep
Although not everyone who suffers with CFS will display all of the above, two or more of these symptoms would definitely bear further investigation. By contrast, sleep deprived people would not usually experience swollen lymph nodes, joint pain, feverishness or sore throat.

CFS often follows a bout of flu or other respiratory disease. It’s onset can be quite sudden following recovery of the initial disease. It occurs more frequently in middle age and elderly people, and twice as often in women as men. Sleep deprivation is not so choosey! It can affect male, female and all ages alike.

CFS is a debilitating illness which is hard to diagnose due to the symptoms being non specific. Also the symptoms described by the sufferers often cannot be verified. For instance, patients often describe feeling feverish although their temperature is normal.

Recent studies indicate CFS may in fact be an immune disorder due to inflammation of the immune system, but there are medical practitioners who still believe it to be a disease of “malingerers". In fact some of those suffering with CFS often wonder sometimes if they are imagining their symptoms. But CFS is very real and can lead to broken marriages and wrecked careers.

It is very important for those who suspect they have CFS to seek medical attention straight away. If you feel your doctor is not taking you seriously, get a second and even a third opinion. It helps if you have been seeing the same doctor for some time, as they know you and can recognize that you are not a “hypochondriac” or a time waster looking for sympathy.

CFS is certainly not new, although the association of symptoms under the name Chronic Fatigue Syndrome only took place in the 1990s. Previously it was largely overlooked or thought to be something else, for example low blood sugar, Lyme disease, allergies, fybromyalgia, yeast infections etc.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Treatment

These vary from antidepressants, steroids, immune system medications and anti-histamines to the more holistic treatments like evening primrose oil, diet therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, removal of dental fillings (mercury poisoning) and gentle exercise programs.

Although lack of a definite treatment for CFS leaves a lot to be desired, the above treatments, whether all or a combination, can prove fairly effective. The broad answer seems to be to treat the symptoms as they occur and make the effort to improve quality of sleep.

The quality of sleep of patients must have a direct effect on the severity of the disease. If depression is the main problem, treatment of that can significantly improve the quality of sleep, thus relieving somewhat the persistent fatigue.

In conclusion. a combination of better quality sleep with gentle exercise, optimal diet and cognitive behavioural therapy would go a long way to improving the lives of patients with CFS.

New Hair Vitamin Discovered: Straight from the Labs

By: David Kern

The search for a true hair vitamin has puzzled scientists for years. Now, doctors in California have identified a vitamin-like substance that looks like the natural solution to balding and unwanted hair loss…

Stunning Results in “Leftover” Mice

Doctors at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles had some mice left over from drug experiments. Some of the animals had excessive hair loss, but were otherwise healthy. They decided to see if they could regrow hair in the mice, by adding a natural extract- known as polyphenols- to their diet.

Hair Loss “Stopped Completely”

The doctors divided the mice into two groups. They gave the first group a polyphenol extract added to their drinking water. The other group received plain water only.

After six months, the mice receiving the polyphenols in their drinking water showed no progressive hair loss. This finding is remarkable and bears repeating. In every one of the mice fed the extract in their water, hair loss completely stopped.

Polyphenols Grow New Hair

The findings on hair loss cessation are exciting by themselves. But the real surprise is the report of “significant regrowth” of hair in animals receiving the polyphenol treatment.

The L.A. scientists found that 33% of the treated mice had significant hair regrowth. They actually referred to this as “spontaneous remission,” a medical term usually reserved for unexplainable or miraculous reversal of disease.

No hair regrowth was observed in the untreated (control) group. Other than the polyphenols, both groups were fed the same diet. Both were housed in the same conditions. Only the polyphenol group had zero further hair loss, and substantial hair regrowth.

Science Strongest for Apple Polyphenols and Hair Growth

Previous experiments have proven that polyphenols from apple skins, grape seeds and barley all exhibit the ability to regrow hair in animal and human trials. This is the first report in the literature showing that green tea polyphenols also have some hair growth effects. This study is also important because it’s the first time that polyphenols have produced new hair growth when taken internally.

Proof of “Significant Regrowth”

Human clinical trials on apple polyphenols, specifically procyanidins, have shown the best and fastest results in hair regrowth, but have only been tested topically. This latest study is proof that polyphenols, taken internally, have significant hair growth effects in mammals.

The human hair cycle is a complex process. Other vitamins, minerals and hormones are certainly involved in the general health of hair follicles, skin, and other organs. But now, for the first time, you can specifically target hair loss and regrowth with polyphenols- the new hair vitamin.

The Effects Of Smoking On Your Appearance

By: Catherine Olivia

The Surgeon General of the United States has stated “Smoking cessation (stopping smoking) represents the single most important step that smokers can take to enhance the length and quality of their lives.” It may also be the most important step that you can take to improve the quality of your appearance. In 1985 the term “smokers face” was added to the medical dictionary. A study done in Norway in 1998 cited that women emphasize the effect of smoking on physical appearance as a general motivation to quit, whereas men mentioned general health benefits.

I have to say truthfully that vanity had something to do with my decision to quit smoking. I had started smoking at the age of 16 when I started dating a smoker. Unfortunately, when the relationship ended the smoking didn’t. I was left with a habit that would haunt me.

It was in the late 70’s when I worked in a medical office where we administered chemotherapy to cancer patients. I knew more about the health consequences than most people witnessing it first hand on a daily basis. I even had an ashtray at my desk and smoked in the office. Like most smokers I was in a state of denial. I was in my early 20’s and felt invincible. I said to myself “it won’t happen to me". Besides, I enjoyed my cigarette and cup of coffee in the morning, and nothing could beat relaxing with a cigarette after a good meal. It seemed all my friends smoked too.

I was in my mid-30’s when I met a man whose parents were smokers. When I looked at his mother’s aged and horribly lined face I thought “Oh my God, that could be me in twenty more years.” Seeing her made an impression on me that I’ll never forget. She was obviously a long time smoker with the tell-tale vertical lines all around her mouth. She had a grayish tinge to her skin, which was as thin as it could be. She looked a full 10 years older than her true age. Her fingers were actually stained yellow by nicotine. It was a wake up call for me.

There is no denying the negative effects of smoking on your appearance. Smoking dries out the skin. Smoking causes blood vessel constriction of the top layers of skin which reduces the oxygen levels which leads to a dull complexion. Due to this constriction of blood vessels and poor circulation a smokers skin is thinner than a non-smokers skin. It has been shown in studies to be up to 40% thinner. Smoking reduces the level of collagen in the skin which leads to loss of elasticity and the quick formation of lines and wrinkles.

Of course you have everything to gain trying to quit smoking aside from just the improvement in your physical appearance. Another report released by the U.S. Surgeon General in 2004 entitled “The Health Consequences of Smoking,” revealed that smoking (or living with a person who smokes) can cause disease in nearly every organ of the body, in men as well as women.

I was lucky that I successfully kicked the habit almost ten years ago. I do have a trace of those tell-tale lip lines and although you may not notice them, I do. I have spent a fortune over the years in skin care products. I’ll never have the face I would have had if I had never started smoking. But today I am a much happier and more importantly, a much healthier person for having stopped.

Whatever your reason, vanity or health - just quit!

Melatonin

Melatonin was discovered in the 1950s and became available over the counter in 1994. Melatonin is a hormone released from the pineal gland each night to help us sleep. Melatonin secretion is enhanced in darkness and decreased by light exposure. As we age, melatonin production decreases. In addition to sleep, melatonin has many other benefits.

Some Possible Benefits:
• Helps promote the body’s natural sleep rhythm.
• Helps you feel more alert and rested after a night’s sleep.
• May help fight jet lag.
• Possesses antioxidant properties and may benefit the immune system.

Some physicians report seeing their patients benefit from melatonin. Among them is Ray Sahelian, MD, a family practice physician in Los Angeles and author of Melatonin: Nature’s Sleeping Pill, who is enthusiastic about melatonin’s benefits and sees the craze continuing. “I’ve probably talked to and surveyed more people than anyone in the world on this topic,” he says. “I have no doubt melatonin use will increase. It works very well and is safe for occasional use.” Sahelian discourages the use of melatonin by patients who are pregnant, breast feeding, or depressed.

A recent review of studies by researchers at Louisiana State University confirms that it is indeed a powerful antioxidant.

DHEA For Anti-Aging

DHEA, i.e., dehydroepiandrosterone, is a natural steroid hormone produced from cholesterol by the adrenal glands. DHEA is chemically similar to testosterone and estrogen and is easily converted into those hormones. DHEA production peaks in early adulthood and declines in production with age in both men and women. Thus, many diseases which correlate with age also correlate with low levels of DHEA production.

Production peaks at about age 25, declining steadily after that. By age 85, it’s down about 95%.

People who use DHEA claim improve mood, increased energy and libido and use it to counteract stress hormones, preserve muscle, strengthen the immune system, and prevent cancer and heart disease.

According to USA Today, “Short-term use at moderate doses - 25-50 mg a day should pose no problems. ‘There’s a right dose for every medication. When the dose is exceeded, side effects occur. It’s the same with DHEA. When low doses are used, people feel well-being.’”

Usually most steroids do tell the body to manufacture less, when hormonal levels get too high. “Fortunately, DHEA appears to be one of the exceptions… DHEA supplements, except in very high doses are not likely to stop our body’s own production, although there are no long-term human studies to confirm this.”

Why People Take It

Weight Loss. In a 28-day study, DHEA therapy resulted in a group of men losing 31 percent of their mean body fat without changing their body weight. The role of DHEA in weight loss may be related to the hormone’s blocking of an enzyme known to produce fat tissue and promote cancer cell growth. The same 31 percent loss of body fat without changing total body weight was observed in mice experiments conducted by DHEA research pioneer Arthur Schwartz, Ph.D., professor at Fels Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Biology at Temple University School of Medicine.

DHEA suppresses the appetite, and particularly suppresses hunger for calorie-laden fats. The anti-obesity effect of DHEA may be based on the hormone’s inhibitory effect on the fat-producing enzyme glucose-6-dehydrogenase (G6DPH). Another effect of DHEA seems to be its stimulation of cholecystokinin (CCK), which signals the body to feel satiated as if having completed a full meal.

Brain Function. Brain tissue contains 6.5 times the concentrations of DHEA than other tissue in the body. Studies indicate that DHEA administration improves memory and cognitive processing, acts as a growth hormone in helping neurons grow new dendrites, and controls levels of the stress hormone cortisol. A study in a nursing home of 61 men between the ages of 57 to 104 years, found that lower levels of DHEA correlated with greater dependency and increased difficulty in conducting daily activities.

Mood and Sense of Well Being. In a 1994 double-blind, controlled study conducted by Dr. Arlene Morales, Samuel Yen, and their associates at the University of California School of Medicine in San Diego, 17 women and 13 men between the ages of 40 and 70 were divided into two groups: one received 50 milligrams of DHEA orally for 3 months and the other group received placebos. The group receiving the DHEA had significant results in that 82 percent of the women and 67 percent of the men reported an improved sense of well being, including better quality of sleep, increased energy, feeling more relaxed, and more capable of handling stress. In another study, a group of middle-aged and elderly men taking DHEA for one year reportedly experienced a greater sense of well-being, improved ability to cope with stress, increased mobility, reduced pain, and improved sleep. Research by Owen M. Wolkowitz, MD and colleagues in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, determined that DHEA was effective in treating depression and that the improvement was dose related, with greater improvement noted for subjects taking larger doses of DHEA.

Sex Drive. Approximately 30 to 50 percent of total androgens in adult men are derived from DHEA. In women, an estimated 70 percent of estrogens before menopause and nearly 100 percent after menopause are derived from DHEA.

DHEA replacement therapy may be one of the most promising approaches to slow aging while reducing the risk of degenerative disease. DHEA supplements have been shown to help prevent cancer, arterial disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease; treat lupus and osteoporosis; enhance the immune system; and enhance memory. In addition, DHEA is reported to rejuvenate virtually every organ system, restore energy, improve mood, increase sex drive, relieve stress, reduce body fat, and make the skin softer and hair shinier. DHEA gives people the ability to take control of the aging process, and undo the damage inflicted by time. One of the most commonly observed effects of taking DHEA is increased energy levels.

Acetyl L-carnitine For Anti-aging

Acetyl L-carnitine (ALC) is similar in form to the amino acid L-carnitine, and also has some similar functions, such as being involved in the metabolism of food into energy. Studies indicate ALC promotes a healthy nervous system and memory.

A major cause of aging is the deterioration of the energy-producing components of the cell which results in reduced cellular metabolic activity, the accumulation of cellular debris, and eventual death of the cell.

One of the most effective nutrients to maintain youthful cellular energy metabolism is the amino acid acetyl L-carnitine (ALC), which functions via several mechanisms to protect cells from the effects of aging. ALC assists in the transport of fat through the cell membrane and into the mitochondria within the cell, where these fats are oxidized to produce the cellular energy ATP.

ALC is the acetyl ester of the amino acid L-carnitine. ALC is absorbed into the bloodstream more efficiently than L-carnitine. It passes more easily through cell membranes, and is utilized more efficiently in the mitochondria of the cell. Several published medical studies have indicated ALC may provide neurological benefits.

Weight Loss Information

More Americans than ever are losing their battles with weight loss as the number of obese men and women in America has doubled in the past 30 years. Nearly 60% of Americans are overweight or obese today. If you are struggling to keep your stomach from overlapping your belt then here are a few pointers for you. Listening to all the weight loss methods and messages out there can confuse you and make you forget about the very important basics to keeping your weight down.

Causes For Weight Gain

It is very easy this day and age to fall into alot of habbits that can contribute to your dreaded weight gain. Below are few of many reasons why so many Americans are becoming overweight:

Consuming 300 more calories per day then 20 years ago.
We are eating out alot more than normal.
Eating larger sized portions of their meals.
Think that low fat foods are good and can eat as much as they want.
And the big reason, not enough excerise.
Many people that try to keep their weight down do so by only eating low fat foods. However, many low fat foods have more calories than the normal food. Be sure to read the labels on foods, although fat matters calories count.

Weight Gain Prevention

Physical activity is a factor too, about a third of Americans do not get enough physical excercise. Instead we spend most of our time sitting at our computers, watching TV, driving instead of walking, taking the elevator instead of the stairs, or taking any other kind of short cut that allow us to work less. It is recommended that you get 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day such as a brisk walk or a bike ride.

By sticking with the above basics weight loss and maintenance can be achieved by adding a few simple minor changes to your lifestyle. There are no quick fixes or magic methods. Losing weight and keeping the pounds off does not come easy for many people. The idea of eating less and moving more should be the common approach.

CoQ10 - Why You Need It

CoQ10 is a naturally occurring nutrient found in each cell of the body. CoQ10 was first identified by University of Wisconsin researchers in 1957. CoQ10 is found in foods, particularly in fish and meats. In addition to playing a significant role in the energy system of each of our cells, CoQ10 is a great antioxidant. Many who take CoQ10 notice that this nutrient enhances energy and mental clarity.

CoQ10 is a critical nutrient involved in the production of energy within our cells and has been widely used in this country for various cardiac conditions, especially congestive heart failure (CHF). Since its discovery, studies of CoQ10 ’s clinical value has led to widespread use and substantiation of its benefits, such as treating heart diseases, increasing energy levels, enhancing the immune system, reversing gum disease, providing antioxidant activity, and preventing certain side effects of common drugs.

Coenzyme Q10 is present throughout the human body. It aids metabolic reactions such as the transformation of food into ATP, the energy used by the body. Cell mitochondria (the part of cells where energy is produced) show the greatest concentration of CoQ10 in the body. Similarly, organs that contain higher amounts of mitochondria per cell are those which overall have the greatest amount of CoQ10. These include the heart and the liver. Healing of periodontal tissue (the gums of the mouth), may require increased energy production; therefore, researchers have explored the effects of CoQ10 supplementation in people with periodontal disease.

Currently, there’s even an exciting study underway with CoQ10 in patients with early Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in this country (after Alzheimer’s), affecting about 1% of all people over the age of 50. Parkinson’s is caused by the death of brain cells that control movement. It is a double-blinded, prospective, randomized study using doses of CoQ10 of 300 mg, 600 mg and 1200 mg daily. The study will be completed later this year and it may turn out that high dose co-enzyme Q10 may slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease. There is strong evidence in the medical literature indicating CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant and may protect the neurons (brain cells) from dying.

Fish Oil For Anti-Aging and A Lot More

Not getting enough of the right types of fish in your diet? Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are known to play a role in neurological, immune system, heart and vision health. Mega EFA contains the highest levels of both omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA), including EPA & DHA. It has up to 300% more when compared to other products on the market. A recent study found that patients who consumed fish once or more per week had a 60% reduced risk in developing Alzheimer’s disease, compared to patients who rarely ate fish. Brain cells need adequate levels of DHA to function optimally. Also, low levels of DHA have been linked to psychological disorders, including depression.

The White House recently issued a directive to people to increase consumption of omega-3 fatty acids to reduce disease rates. Mega EFA is formulated using only pharmaceutical grade, molecularly distilled fresh, deep sea, cold-water fish body oils, not fish liver oils. This process is the best way to concentrate and purify essential fatty acids, and guarantee safety by eliminating heavy metals or PCB contaminants.

Some of the Many Benefits of Fish Oil

Fish oils are vital to your health
PORTLAND, OREGON. Research carried out over the past 20 years has clearly shown that omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are essential elements in human nutrition. the primary source of DHA and EPA is fatty fish and oils from the tissues of such fish. DHA is a vital component of the phospholipids in cell membranes throughout the body, but is particularly abundant in the brain, retina, and sperm. fish oils either from whole fish or in the form of supplements have been found to aid in preventing or ameliorating coronary heart disease, stroke, lupus, nephropathy (kidney disorders), Crohn’s disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, hypertension, and rheumatoid arthritis. fish oils have been found particularly effective in preventing arrhythmias and sudden death from cardiac arrest. Several studies have shown that people who eat fish once or more each week can reduce their risk of sudden cardiac death by 50-70 per cent. EPA has been found to inhibit blood clotting and EPA and DHA contained in fish oils inhibit the development of atherosclerosis. Fish oil supplementation also significantly lowers overall triglyceride and cholesterol levels without affecting the level of HDL ("good” cholesterol).

Recent research has shown that the consumption of high fat meals can initiate the development of atherosclerotic deposits. This effect can be substantially reduced by taking fish oil prior to eating such meals. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to fetal development and deficiency of DHA during gestation can lead to visual impairment and perhaps, lower intelligence quotients. In summary, omega-3 fatty acids and in particular, DHA and EPA from fish oils, are essential for human development and in the prevention and amelioration of many common disorders. [38 references]

Benefits of essential fatty acids
HONOLULU, HAWAII. Dr. Joseph Pepping, a consulting pharmacist at the Kaiser Permanente, provides a comprehensive review of the many benefits of omega-3 fatty acids and their derivatives. He cites evidence that eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which are found in fish oils are helpful in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, arrhythmias, diabetes, breast cancer, and arthritis. While EPA is readily synthesized in the body from alpha-linolenic acid (found in flaxseed oil) Dr. Pepping states that the synthesis of DHA is much more difficult and that DHA must be obtained directly from fish, certain algae or gree, leafy vegetables. He also points out that the body’s optimal balance between omega-6 (linoleic) and omega-3 (linolenic) fatty acids is a 2:1 to 4:1 ratio. Unfortunately, the typical Western diet contains these acids in ratios of 20:1 to 25:1. An excess of omega-6 fatty acids can lead to formation of blood clots, allergic and inflammatory disorders, and the accelerated growth of certain cancer cells. Dr. Pepping recommends two servings of cold-water fish (e.g. salmon, mackerel or herring) per week, 2-4 grams of fish oil capsules per day or 15-30 ml of flaxseed oil per day as a preventive measure. He points out that it is important to add 200 IU of vitamin E to the daily diet if supplementing with fish oils. He also advises caution regarding fish oil supplementation in patients taking warfarin, heparin, low-molecular weight heparin, ticlopidine or clopidogrel.

Eating fish prevents death of heart attack patients
AALBORG, DENMARK. A low degree of heart rate variability (HRV) is a very strong predictor of sudden death among survivors of a heart attack (myocardial infraction). Danish researchers now report that a high fish consumption increases the concentration of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in cell membranes and that this increase is associated with a significant beneficial increase in HRV. Their study involved 52 patients who ate fish once a week had an 18 percent higher HRV than non-fish eaters. Fish eaters were also found to have a higher content of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in their blood platelets. Patients with more than 3.14 per cent DHA in their platelets were found to have a 43 per cent higher HRV than patients with a DHA content of less than 2.26 per cent. The researchers also discovered that a high ratio of arachidonic acid to DHA in the platelets corresponds to a significantly lower HRV. Other research has shown that the consumption of just one fatty fish meal per week reduces the risk of primary cardiac arrest by 50 per cent.

Fish oils reduce blood pressure
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. The daily consumption of fish oils (omega-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids) can significantly lower blood pressure in people suffering from hypertension. The benefit of the fish oils is comparable to that obtainable by sodium reduction and weight loss. A group of medical researchers at the Johns Hopkins Medical School evaluated the results of 17 clinical trials involving supplementation with fish oils for periods of three months or less. They found that the consumption of 3 grams per day of fish oil (6-10 capsules) or more led to impressive reductions in the blood pressure of hypertensive individuals. Systolic pressure was lowered by an average of 5.5 mm Hg and diastolic pressure was lowered by 3.5 mm Hg. The effect was found to be more pronounced at higher blood pressures and no significant effects were noted in people with normal blood pressure. Twenty-eight percent of the participants in the trials reported side effects such as a fishy taste or belching.

The doctors suggest that fish oil supplementation may be a valuable therapy in patients with borderline hypertension who would otherwise be candidates for conventional drug therapy. They point out that the effects of long term (> 3 months) supplementation are unknown and that lower dosages than 3 g/day may be desirable and perhaps as effective. NOTE: Systolic pressure is the first (highest) reading given for a blood pressure measurement, diastolic is the second (lowest) reading, i.e. 120/80.

Fish consumption and depression
ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND. Dr. Joseph Hibbeln, a researcher at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports in a letter to The Lancet that he has found a convincing correlation between fish consumption and the incidence of major depression. Dr. Hibbeln correlated the annual incidence of major depression per 100 people in nine countries with the consumption of fish. He found a high incidence of depression in countries with low fish consumption. New Zealand with an annual fish consumption of only 40 lbs had an annual incidence rate of depression of 5.8 per cent while Korea with a fish consumption of more that 100 lbs/year had an annual incidence rate of only 2.3 percent. Japan with a fish consumption of almost d150 lbs/year had the lowest incidence of major depression (0.12 per cent). Dr. Hibbeln cautions that various economic, social, cultural and other factors could have influenced his results, but points out that high blood plasma concentrations of docosahexaenoic acid, and essential fatty acid found in fish, has been linked to increased serotonin turnover and lower incidences of depression and suicide.

Blueberries For Anti-aging

Filed under: — site admin @ 11:31 am

Blueberries appear to be an effective anti-aging remedy, at least in lab animals. And it doesn’t take a mental giant to figure out that human tests aren’t far behind. That should make blueberry farmers smile because our age-phobic society can’t seem to get enough of anti-aging remedies. Blueberries appear to retard the aging process because of their antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help reduce damage during a cell’s digestion of nutrients. If this digestive process occurs too rapidly (rapid oxidation) then the result is oxidative stress, cell damage.

For centuries, people have enjoyed blueberries for their flavor and color. In a new research study, animals fed a blueberry extract diet, rich in naturally-derived antioxidants, showed fewer age-related motor changes and out-performed their study counterparts on memory tests. It appears that blueberries and other foods containing antioxidants may protect the body against age-related damage and a number of neurodegenerative diseases. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture funded the study.

“The exciting finding from this study is the potential reversal of some age-related impairments in both memory and motor coordination, especially with blueberry supplements,” said Molly Wagster, Ph.D., a Health Scientist Administrator with the NIA’s Neuroscience and Neurospsychology of Aging Program. “For these animals at least, investigators were able to produce a noticeable improvement within a relatively short period of time. A next important step in the research will be to see if the improvements are long lasting.”

“Whether results found in this study will also prove true for humans remains to be seen,” says Marcelle Morrison-Bogorad, Ph.D., who directs the NIA’s Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging Program. “The only way to determine whether particular food ingredients actually work to slow age-related cognitive decline in humans as well is to conduct controlled clinical trials.”

The study was conducted by James Joseph, Ph.D. of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, and Paula C. Bickford, Ph.D. of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Denver. The study results appear in the September 15, 1999, issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

Hear what the experts say about HGH Human Growth Hormone!

“The effects of six months of HGH growth hormone on lean body mass and adipose-tissue mass were equivalent in magnitude to the changes incurred during 10 to 20 years of aging."– Daniel Rudman, M.D., Medical College of Wisconsin.

“All of these ideas about treating people with HGH growth hormone have been directed towards people sixty-five and older. If you look at the data, people have so-called ‘elderly’ levels by age forty. Perhaps we should be giving HGH replacement therapy earlier rather than attempting to treat tissues that have seen little or no HGH growth hormone for decades.” Dr. Eve Van Cauter, HGH researcher, University of Chicago Medical Center.

“HGH stops the aging process in the body and reverses many of the problems that are caused by aging, such as wrinkling skin, increased body fat, decreased muscle mass, increased cholesterol, decreased stamina and energy, decreased mental function, impaired neurological functions such as Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis. IGF-1 or growth hormone is truly an amazing substance which is both safe and effective with no known side effects unless it’s used in an overdose manner.” Dr. Lawrence Dornan, member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging

“HGH (Growth Hormone) is the ultimate anti-aging therapy. It effects almost every cell in the body, rejuvenating the skin and bones, regenerating the heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys, bringing organ and tissue function back to youthful levels. It is an anti-disease medicine that revitalizes the immune system, lowers the risk factors for heart attack and stroke, improves oxygen uptake in emphysema patients, and prevents osteoporosis. It is under investigation for a host of different diseases from post-polio syndrome to AIDS. HGH is the most effective anti-obesity drug ever discovered, reviving up the metabolism to youthful levels, resculpting the body by selectively reducing the fat in the waist, abdomen, hips, and thighs, and at the same time increasing muscle mass. HGH may be the most powerful aphrodisiac ever discovered, reviving flagging sexual and potency in older men.

HGH is cosmetic surgery in a bottle, smoothing out facial wrinkles; restoring the elasticity, thickness, and contours of youthful skin; reversing the loss of extracellular water that makes old people look like dried-up prunes. It has healing powers that close ulcerated wounds and regrow burned skin. It is the secret ingredient in the age-defying bodies of weight lifters and it enhances exercise performance, allowing you to do higher-intensity workouts of longer duration. It reverses the insomnia of later life, restoring the “slow wave” or deepest level of sleep. And HGH is a mood elevator, lifting the spirits along with the body, bringing back a zest for life many people thought was lost forever. The latest research shows that it holds promise for that most intractable and terrifying disease of aging - Alzheimer’s.” Dr. Ronald Klatz, Author “Grow Young with HGH”

HGH - What is it?

Filed under: — site admin @ 3:59 pm

HGH - What is human growth hormone?
HGH is arguably the most important hormone in your body, Human Growth Hormone, or HGH, is produced by the pituitary gland in your brain. HGH is responsible for the health and vitality associated with our youth.

After the age of 20, the HGH release rate greatly decreases, and by the age of 30 most people start to notice an acceleration in the aging process. One of the leading factors involved in this decline is the decreased production of HGH (Human Growth Hormone).

Studies indicate that your body produces about 15% less HGH with each successive decade. As you get older, and your body begins to produce less HGH (human growth hormone), you start to notice that you look and feel older. The HGH products listed here can cause your own body to produce more HGH naturally.
